Squire's Castle

One of my favorite things to do when it's warm is to go to the metroparks. I don't go very often but there is something nice about just wandering through the woods. I have so many memories of getting lost with friends by going off trail. My most visited spot in the metroparks near me is called Squire's Castle. A few days ago  when I was still wearing my boot from hurting my foot, I decided to head out and read a magazine and enjoy the fresh air.

Squire's castle has a really interesting history behind it. It was being built to be a gatekeeper's home behind Feargus B Squire's home which was never even began. Squire was one of the founders of Standard Oil Company. This project was never completed and was sold to the Cleveland Metroparks in 1925. The castle is actual just a shell, when you walk through you can see that there was supposed to be a second floor but it was never put in, and my favorite room is the round one on the right side of the picture. There is a huge fireplace inside.

Squire's castle is also supposed to be haunted by Squire's wife Rebecca, who it is said tripped and broke her neck in the castle. This has been proven wrong because I found while I was reading about this that she passed away in another city, after the property had been sold. I remember in high school my friends and I would sometimes sneak out here to see if we could find Rebecca, and we would quickly be caught by park rangers and sent home! Even though it has this haunted history, it's a place where a lot of people come to walk the trails behind it, and take pictures (I took my prom pictures here) and have barbeques and parties.

Do you have any metroparks or haunted places near where you live?

  1. Oh I've heard of this place and I SOOOO want to visit! Oh my goodness! How cool :)

  2. I saw the title, but didn't realize it was your post. I was like "Hey, I've been there before!" Then I realized that it was your post and you live nearish to me...so that makes perfect sense that you would go to Squire's Castle. Anyways...enough of my rambling...I do love Squire's Castle.

    1. Haha sorry for the confusion! Yeah it's the best :)

  3. I love the Metro Parks too, but none near me are that MAGICAL.
