Literary Tattoos

Lately I have really been thinking about tattoos. I have grand visions of having a half sleeve of some sort, as well as others, but my fear of pain and simply deciding on a coherent design has stopped me from having any. But I decided it would be fun to share all the ideas floating around in my head.

My very first idea was to have a "Beauty and the Beast" themed sleeve. Not the actual cartoon drawings, but more of a vintage feel, using the rose, an old grandfather clock, teapot, books, the mirror and the blue bow. Belle is and always will be my favorite Disney princess. She is one of the reasons that I have always loved to read, and I could always relate to her not quite fitting in with everyone else. I must say I'm extremely jealous of her library, and she's even the inspiration for my blog name! While I still love the idea of having many tattoos dedicated to her, I believe I now lean more towards having tattoos which represent many different books and stories which I hold dear. Instead, I would represent Belle simply through a teapot with a blue floral design.

I love the Harry Potter series as well as the movies. I was 11 when "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" movie came out, so I kind of grew at the same time as the characters. I felt as if they were some of my best friends, and it was just so devastating to read the last book, it felt like my friends died. For Harry Potter, I would choose 9¾ to signify the magical platform which took the children to Hogwarts, through which everything about the stories could become possible.

The Notebook gets so much flack as a sappy book/movie, but I absolutely love it. I can read and watch the story over and over again, to the point that I can recite a lot of the movie by heart. For the Notebook I would get the "If you're a bird, I'm a bird" quote. It short and simple, and one of my favorite lines.

The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books of all time, (you can read a review I did of the new movie here) and I am unsure of what I would get to represent it. Possibly a picture the green light which Gatsby constantly reached for, or maybe just the quote "Gatsby believed in the green light".

Little Women is another one of my favorite books, and often I will say it is my absolute favorite. Jo March was a strong role model for me as a child. She was a writer, which I aspired to be then, she spoke her mind always, which I wished I could do, and most of all she loved and cared for her friends and family. I would choose a quote from Jo, most likely "I like good strong words that mean something". I couldn't find a picture with that exact quote, but I like the placement of the girl's quote on her shoulder.

I'm a bit of a sci-fi nerd as well, and Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the first sci-fi book I ever read. Douglas Adams is an amazing author and it is a hilarious read. From this book I would probably get either "Don't Panic", or "42", since it's the great secret of the universe and the meaning of life.

Most of the tattoos I want have to do with books. Reading is one of my favorite activities, and it has always held a special place in my heart. Books can transport you to different places, different worlds. Characters can become your best friends or your worst enemies. My love of books is the reason that I'm in school to be a librarian, so I think it's fitting that majority of my tattoo wishes are of a literary nature. I do still want a few non-book related ones, namely lilies and an anchor. Lilies because they are my favorite flowers and I think they're beautiful, and the anchor really has no meaning behind it, I just really like the clean simple lines.

For me to actual get any of these tattoos from this dream list, I need to get over my fear of the pain! My goal is to get one tattoo by the end of the summer, so we shall see. I also wanted to mention that all the pictures of tattoos I've used are simply inspiration, I would not copy someone else's exact tattoo design, that seems wrong to steal something as personal as a tattoo design.

Do you have any tattoos you want or any cool tattoos that you have? I would love to see them and hear the stories behind them!

  1. This is such a cool list! I love how you included the teapot one--like the name of your blog :) I really like the 42 one because it's so small and yet is really cool at the same time. I think one that said Don't Blink would be pretty awesome too!
