Weekend Recap: Porchfest and Lost Boys

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Hello hello! Happy Monday! I apologize for this being so late, Mondays have become my long work day so I haven't been home but I did want to quickly tell you all about my weekend, and vacation posts will be coming too, once I get through all of the 200+ pictures I took...oh geez!

Well, what I can say is that this week was super fun! I feel like since it's summer my weekends are jammed full with fun summer events. Friday was the first full day I was back so that was really a sleep and relax day, but I went to dinner with my friends Jenna and Markisha at Buffalo Wild Wings, and then we went to Target. I cannot resist a Target trip! I bought a new book, like I needed more books, but they had a sale on the newest City of Bones book City of Heavenly Fire. I don't do as much teen fiction as I used to but this series was popular among the other librarians last year and I got hooked and may or may not have read all five books in two or three weeks...So I was super excited about this one!

Saturday was Larchmere Porchfest, which is a local music festival in the Larchmere neighborhood (really close to me) and it's a music festival where bands play on....you guessed it, porches! It's a really cool concept. I got there a bit early and couldn't find my friends and so I couldn't resist popping into the yarn shop there, Fine Points. I got the most beautiful green yarn by Madeline Tosh and I even got a birthday discount! Eventually I met up with my friends, some from work, and my friends Dawn and Dell from my old job at JCPenney! I hadn't seen either of them in so long, and I got to see their baby Devon, he's so cute! Dawn and I are Big Brother buddies, I was always a fan of Big Brother, but I didn't realize how crazy the fans really get and how much you can really get into the game..we may have even started making up a song in honor of Big Brother 16 US starting up again this week (We also watch Canada!).

Saturday night I went to the Late Shift movies series sponsored by Melt Bar and Grilled with my friends Steph and Michelle where you can see an old movie for $5 at midnight once a month. This month it was The Lost Boys. I am not a scary movie person, but for some reason I love The Lost Boys. I think that it's because it has so much silly 80s comedy mixed in and it's not really horror, it's more just vampires pop out at you (which I still don't like!). It was a good end to the night, the audience in the theater was laughing and making comments the whole time, which was fine since I think most people had seen it before, and it made it more fun!

How was everyone's weekend? I hope it was a nice one!

24

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Today is my 24th birthday! Currently I'm in a car driving back from the best family vacation ever (I'll write all about it next week!) but I wanted to do a little update on my goals from last year. There's no fun song for 24 but I'm pretty excited for this upcoming year. I'll be done with graduate school and hope to be getting a job and moving out (not too far hopefully!) but lots of life changes. Change is good and I'm excited for what's to come. Now, on to my list of goals from last year:

1. Learn to play ukelele. I played flute from 5th to 12th grade and I loved playing an instrument. Lately I have been thinking about learning to play something new, and a ukelele seems like a perfect start.
Ehhhh....I still have work to do on this one. I can now tune really well, strum a bit and play a few chords, but I have yet to string together enough chords to play a song, so incomplete for now.

2. Complete my first novel. I have always liked to write ever since I was young, but I gave up writing for fun when life got busy with schoolwork and things. Now I feel that I have more time to write, I have actually started writing again. In April I began a book, and I have a few chapters but I would like to actually finish it. I have lots of half finished or less pieces all over my room and it would be amazing to actually finish this project.
Honestly...I think I wrote once after I said this and left the book to sit sad on my computer. I have been journaling more but creative writing just hasn't happened. Incomplete.

3. Learn to crochet. I was taught to knit by one of my Girl Scout leaders when I was younger, and I am pretty good at following patterns for that, but crocheting is another story. I can do a simple chain stitch and form rows, but I can't do anything fancy, not even a granny square.
Knitting took over my life and I had zero desire to learn a new skill while still trying to challenge myself with the knitting, so I'm not even really ashamed of this one. Still incomplete.

4. Improve my photography skills. I just discovered all the different settings on my digital camera, and I haven't actually explored all of the different things my camera can do. I also feel I should read up more on what all the settings mean. I like to take pictures but know nothing about techniques to use.
I got my new camera for Christmas and looking at my very first outfit post to now I can saw my photography skills and modelling skills have gotten significantly better. Now, there's always room for improvement so this is something I'm still working on but I give this a check for improvement.

5. Become a better blogger. I'm proud that I have actually started and continued blogging for these past 6 months, and I feel like it's time to learn more about design and give you lovely ladies some better content. Thanks for bearing with me as I figure this out.
Oh man, I was only blogging for 6 months this time last year, now it's been a year and a half! I definitely think I'm getting better at blogging but geez oh man I'm not perfect. The schedule I started in April I really enjoy and I like that I give myself the freedom to skip days if I really don't feel like it without feeling too badly. I think my design skills have improved a ton since I started. Blogging is something you can constantly learn something new or something more but I think the goal of improving was met, and I can still try to improve even more!

6. Continue working out consistently. This year I have started working out more often and I love it. I get up early and walk, do workout videos, and occasionally go to yoga class (not as much as I should). I feel so much better about myself and have so much more energy than I feel like I have in a long time.
Okay, this one is half accomplished. I love to walk and get outdoors but this winter was so horrible I didn't want to do anything but layer up and sit under covers. So not much working out happened, but since it's been warm again I love getting out for walks!

7. Gain more knitting skills. Even though I have continued knitting here and there I haven't really tried to learn anything new for a very long time. Since I have been going to knitting nights every week I feel like I should try some new stitches, maybe even make a sweater.
I have gained so many more knitting skills in the past year, I have finished not one, but two sweaters, shawls, and lots of little fun things.

8. Try more new recipes. Before this year, the only time I cooked/baked anything was usually only Christmas time when I help my mom bake cookies. I have finally discovered that I love cooking, but I am still no good at making up my own recipes so I'd like to keep cooking and baking and sharing with you all.
Yes! Baking, breakfast, and making soup are my specialties, I love trying new recipes!
9. Go to a blogger meetup. I know I'm still a super small blogger, but whenever I see posts about blogger meetups it just seems like a lot of fun to meet people in your area that do the same thing you do. My friends don't really "get" blogging so it would be great to nerd out with people about it who do :)
This one is half accomplished. I haven't been to a group blogger meetup but I did meet Lauren of Someone Like You who is the absolute sweetest! I also recently, like last week recently, met Kayleigh of Petite Femme Noir she's a brand new blogger and such a sweet lady, go check out both of their blogs :)

10. Do a photo challenge. Going along with improving my photo skills, I think it would be fun to do one of the 30 day challenges or a photo an hour post.
I forgot about this one...I tried to do the photo an hour one last summer and realized that my day was kind of boring so I gave up and then promptly forgot. Incomplete.

11. DIY! I have an almost unhealthy addiction to Pinterest and there are so many cute diy ideas. I would love to host a get together and diy lots of decorations and maybe do some decorating for my new room.
Ehhh...I didn't really do to much to my room or anything else really decorative. Incomplete.

12. Start an Etsy shop. I love Etsy. If you've never been to this website it has lots of cute little shops run by private sellers and you can find anything from vintage clothes to knitted items, to Doctor Who mugs there. I'd love to sell little knitted pieces, I actually thought about doing this years ago but I never got around to it.
Didn't happen, but I did get to make more knit pieces for other people so maybe one day?

13. Get a tattoo. I have been thinking about the same tattoo that I want as my first one for two years now. First I was afraid I was going to change my mind about it, but I haven't, so I should just bite the bullet and not let fear stop me any longer!
Almost complete. My mom and I are getting small tattoos in July, and I have plans to talk to a tattoo artist about planning my tattoo that I was talking about last year. The only hint I'll give is that they both are based on books/movies. This gets a half since it is in the works now.

14. Watch more classic movies. When I watch classics, I tend to stick with the same 10-15 actors and actresses, and I'd like to branch out and find more good movies because I love classics so much. I'd also like to try and watch more silent films.
Yes! I have done so well at watching more classic movies and trying out new to me actors/actresses! Silent films I haven't done so well on, but it's not like the goal stops now :)

15. Find new nerdy shows to watch. I love Doctor Who, Torchwood, Star Trek and Alphas, but I don't really watch that many other sci-fi shows. If anyone has suggestions I would love you to share in the comments!
Ummm...I don't know if I really found new nerdy shows because I don't have time to watch that much tv anymore, and usually any time I would have I watch movies. That being said, I started watching Deadbeat on Hulu which is about a bummy guy who can see ghosts and he helps the ghosts out, kind of like Ghost Whisperer but more comedy. I also started watching Halt and Catch Fire which is pretty much the new Mad Men. Lastly I started watching Vikings on the History Channel. SO GOOD. I started reading all kinds of things about the vikings now. In terms of the specific goal there was a fail but I did find new shows.

16. Actually print out photos and start scrapbooking. I have this huge tupperware box full of programs, movie tickets, little memorobilia and photos from disposable cameras, but I also have a huge external hard drive with hundreds of photos saved on it that I never see. I would love to work on putting these memories in scrap books instead of hiding them away in boxes.
This is something I wish I'd started but I haven't. It's still on  my list and the pictures are still all hidden away in boxes. Incomplete.

17. Do a lighthouse tour. Tieka of Selective Potential always visits the prettiest lighthouses, and I would love to do a lighthouse tour. Ohio isn't far from Michigan, and we have some lighthouses here because of Lake Erie.
Nope, not even one. Oops. Will try again.

18. Go to a reenactment weekend. I would love to go to a vintage style weekend event where everyone dresses up in period clothing, it seems like so much fun. I'd love to go to a World War II event or there's an event in New York every year that is 20s themed.
Well, the closest thing I can say for this one is that in August I'm going to a Rockabilly music festival and will be going all out with 50s style. I'm still working on getting to one of the WWII reenactments but I'm not sure if my schedule will allow. Incomplete for now.

19. Run a 5k. I actually have this goal in the works already because I've signed up to do the Color Run in September. My goal is to actually run majority of the way. I'm not a very good runner, I walk most of the time, but I have been working on running lately, so I hope by September I'm in better shape.Accomplished! I did Color Run and the Jingle Bell Run!

20. Read more. I love to read, I usually read 20-30 books a year and I keep a list of what I've read. Lately I've been reading more blogs than books, so I'd like to get back into reading more books and still read as many blogs.
Seeing as I'm already 25 books in this year, I think I'm winning this goal for sure! I've made more time to read again but I've also started buying more books than I can read again too so my to read pile has just gotten bigger!

21. Go see a sport I've never seen live. I'm not a big sports person but I like going to games, it gets really intense when you're actually there. I would love to go to either roller derby, hockey, basketball, or soccer game.
Does is count that I'm now a FIFA watcher? This may or may not be because I am obsessed with watching John Green play FIFA video games so I actually started following a few teams. Maybe we can call it half done, as in I broadened my horizons and watched something new? Maybe a quarter.

22. Continue being focused on school. This year before I turn 24 I will take my next two semesters of grad school, and after my birthday I'll only have the fall semester left and I will be done with school forever (at least for the known future). I want to continue doing very well and make sure I get the best grades possible and learn as much as I can.
Oh gosh do I want to be done with school! I'm mentally finished and time seems to just be crawling to December 13th. I love school but being in school for 6 and a half years straight is getting to be too long. Even with that being said, I still of course do the best I can and want to do well. I look forward to my classes in the fall, I'm just a little burnt out already from my practicum and working. This goal is definitely complete.

23. Appreciate the little things in life. Life can get busy, so I want to make sure that I stop and think and am thankful for any little quiet moments during my day and the kindness of other people's actions. We go through life in such a rush we forget to appreciate things like this.
This was kind of a throwaway goal when I made it, it was a little cheesy and I really just wanted to make 23 goals. The thing is, I really did start appreciating the little things more, and it shocked me how uncheesy it was in action. I'm happy if I get to start my morning slowly and sit and read a book with a cup of coffee for a bit, or baking, or just talking to my plant George (what? you guys don't talk to your plants? you're missing out!). I think taking little breathers and living in the moment is a good thing to remember.

So this year I'm not going to set another list of goals, I'll keep working on the ones I made of course but I don't want to overload myself with even more. Well, here's to 24, it seems like it's going to be a great year!

C&LM: The Bride Came C.O.D.

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

This movie was about the daughter of an oil tycoon who is about to marry a man who her father does not approve of. The daughter, Joan, is then kidnapped by an airplane pilot, Steve, who is to be paid by her father to do so in order to stop the shotgun wedding. All was well until he airplane went down in the desert. Poor Steve had a broken plane and a very angry lady on his hands!

Steve and Joan end up in a small abandoned western town and meet an old man named Pop who lives alone in the ghost town who helps them out by giving them a place to stay. All the while, her to be husband and her father are in a race to find her first, the husband to marry her, and the father to keep her away from him. Throughout their stay Joan and Steve butt heads but eventually begin to soften towards one another and fall in love.

I really enjoyed this movie, there were a lot of funny moments and I laughed a lot! I'd never seen a movie with James Cagney and Bette Davis but it makes me want to see more of their films.

Sunflower Award!

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Abigail of Sweeter Gets The Journey has tagged me as a nominee for the Sunflower Award! Thank you so much Abigail! She is the absolute sweetest lady.

Abigail has given each of the nominees questions to answer, so here are my answers:

Name one unassuming thing that makes you happy.

Talking walks alone in the park and just enjoying nature.

What would you do with a billion dollars?

I can't even imagine how much money a billion dollars is, but here goes. First, I'd pay off school loans, my family's bills, responsible things. Then I would love to go on a trip around the world and visit as many countries as I could.

When is your favorite time of day?

I never thought I would hear myself say this, but my favorite part of the day is the morning. I like getting up, cooking breakfast and sitting with my coffee or tea for a bit before the rush of the day begins.

What one word do you feel best describes your blog?

Jumbled. It's not a bad thing, I just think I have a lot of interests and I want to share them all in one place.

What is your favorite season of the year and why?

Autumn always. Even though it means winter and snow will be here soon, I love the perfect weather, the changing leaves, Halloween, apple picking, everything is wonderful in the fall.

If you could leave tomorrow and not be back for a week (monetary, job, responsibilities and pet/animal restrictions aside), where would you go?

I would go on a cross country road trip and try to see as much as I can; head to route 66, visit Area 51 and try to spot an alien, visit Salvation Mountain, head up to Seattle, and come back home through the northern states. The furthest west I've been is Chicago, which isn't very far so I would love if I could do this!

Do you play any instruments? If so, what? If not, what would you like to play?

I play flute and piccolo, I played from 5th to 12th grade in concert band, marching band, and pit orchestra. I am slowly learning to play ukelele but learning on your own is much more difficult than taking a class.

Have you ever been in Kansas?

I haven't but boy oh boy I'd love to go after seeing all of Abigail's pictures, it looks so beautiful and serene.

What do you do when you're feeling sad?

I listen to some of my favorite "sad" music (usually Rilo Kiley or the Smiths) or watch my ultimate favorite "sad" movie, 500 Days of Summer. Listening and watching these things end up making me happy again.

My nominees for The Sunflower Award:

Merry of Each Little Bird That Sings

Kayleigh of Petite Femme Noir

Porcelina of Porcelina's World

 Anna of October Rebel

...Aaaand here are the questions for the nominees:
  • What are you currently reading?
  •  What movie do you think more people need to see?
  •  Share one thing that your readers may not know about you.
  • If you could time travel to any point in time for just one day, when and where would you want to visit?
  • Where is your favorite place to go in your hometown?
  • If you had to pick one topic and talk about it for an hour, what would you choose and why?
  • Do you enjoy cooking/baking? If so, what's your best dish?
  • What is your favorite flower?

Thanks again to Abigail for nominating me!

Weekend Recap: Firepits, Early Birthdays, Father's Day

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Happy Monday! Currently I am in the car with my family probably still driving on our way to Tennessee to visit the king! Elvis, of course! I'll of course share more about this next week, but for now, here's how the weekend went.

Friday I met up with a fellow blogger named Kayleigh who blogs over at Petite Femme Noir for coffee. It was really lovely being able to sit down with another blogger and chit chat. I wish that I could visit with all of you because meeting up with bloggers is so fun! After coffee I went to my friend Steph's house and we just had a small get together with pizza and fire in the fire pit. Unfortunately it got really chilly so being outside didn't last too long!

Saturday was my early birthday day! I went to the beach with my friend Christina during the day. It started out a bit cold on our drive there but once we got there it warmed up quickly. When came home and I went out to lunch with my mom and I finally convinced her to go to Tommy's. It's a local restaurant that I used to go to a lot in high school and everything on the menu is named after one of the owner Tommy's friends so it's pretty fun. After this I came home for a bit and then went out to dinner with a bigger group of friends at Willoughby Brewing Company. I got the build you own mac and cheese, and I forgot just how BIG it is. It's really big enough to have two or three people share so I had a lot of leftovers! It was a great night! My friend Michelle got me the prettiest red daises, it was funny because they matched me!

Yesterday was Father's Day, so we went out to breakfast with my grandparents to celebrate! It's become a tradition that we go to Bob Evans for Mother and Father's Day, I always look forward to it.

How was your weekend?

The White Stripes

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Top: H&M//Shorts: American Apparel//Shoes: Target

I have been listening to the White Stripes a lot this week at my practicum because it is completely silent where I'm working, so today I thought I'd emulate one of my favorite high school bands by wearing black, white, and red. It helps that this is one of my favorite color combinations anyway.

This week was my first week of practicum work and regular work and it's kind of kicked my behind! Mondays and Thursday for the next two months will be 12 hour days :( Even so, I had some fun this week! Tuesday I went to karaoke of course and we had a pretty big crowd, there were eight or so of us so woohoo! Much better than last week when it was just my friend Steph and I for the first hour and a half...

Wednesday I hung out with my friend Christina and heard all about her fun vacation. She went to North Carolina for a week and from the pictures of the beach and the cute beach house it looked like such a relaxing vacation. This weekend is pretty packed, I am going to Steph's house for a fire pit night tonight, and my unbirthday-birthday dinner is tomorrow. My birthday is actually next Thursday but I'll be driving back from vacation that day! I'm so excited, I have been waiting for this trip for months and I can't believe it's already here! My family and I are going to Graceland! We're also going to the Memphis Zoo, and then down to Atlanta to visit my aunt and go to the aquarium there. I'll have lots to tell you all about next week! Have a lovely weekend!

As it's Friday and I've actually posted an outfit post I will be linking up with Passion for Fashion this week over on Rachel the Hat's blog!

Lady Fashion Crush: Elizabeth Taylor

All photos found on Pinterest

Ms. Elizabeth Taylor is the epitome of beauty, her style was always fabulous, I couldn't find a picture where she didn't look beautiful! I picked her this week because I recently watched Julia Misbehaves and even though her part was small, I was reminded how much I like her. Out of this group of outfits I think I like the second one best. I've been trying to get ideas for more casual vintage styles since it's getting hotter and full skirts can't work as often in 90 degree heat (at least for me!).

What's your favorite?

Weekend Recap: TFiOS, MIX and Pasta

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Well this weekend was a good one! First, I kicked it off by seeing an early screening of The Fault in Our Stars and it was SO GOOD! I cried a little, and I don't cry at any movie (other than 500 Days of Summer, it's weird I know), but ughhhh, it was so good! It stuck pretty closely to the storyline which I was happy about and if you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for?! Oh, did I mention that our theater was empty? We went Thursday night at 10, after the special 8:30 showing that included free bracelets and a live talk with the cast and John Green, but sadly I was working until 9. This meant that the 10 pm screening was dead!

Friday night I went to MIX at the Cleveland Museum of Art with some ladies from work and it was so fun! MIX events happen the first Friday of every month and they pretty much allow you to wander around the museum with other MIX goers and listen to music. We ate dinner there and looked around a bit, and then tried a new place called Coquette. They serve cute little cakes, macaroons, and drinks. I tried a mango cake and it was as good as it looked! Sorry I forgot to take a picture because it was that good.

Friday was also my mom's birthday, but she was tired after work, so Saturday night we went to dinner at Olive Garden and then came home and totally vegged out and watched tv. It was really nice.

Today I started my practicum and did my first 12 hour day (that and work after). I'm just going to put it out there now that posting my become a bit scattered as I'm not going to be home as much for the next two months, so just a little warning!

How was your weekend?

Lady Fashion Crush: Myrna Loy

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

 All photos found on Pinterest

I may or may not be already scouring ravelry for a knitting pattern similar to the sweater in the first picture...so that one has to be my favorite of the week! Myrna Loy is one of my mom's favorites, anytime I'm watching a movie with her in it, somehow she'll pop up and go "is that Myrna Loy??", haha. All of the photos I found of her were just so glamourous, she was a gorgeous lady. The first movie I saw with her in it was Mr. Blanding's Builds His Dream Home, which also sparked my interest in Cary Grant films.

Are you a fan of Myrna Loy? Have you seen some of her films? In reading the list of her filmography I realized I have barely touched the surface of seeing all of them!

C&LM: Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I finally read the entire thing! I have tried to read Pride and Prejudice a few times and while of course I love the story, Jane Austen's writing style is something you have to get used to. Once I did, I loved it and it became so much easier to understand and to see the humor that Austen uses. I think it's because I read Wuthering Heights last year and Bronte's style is close to Austen, at least I think so, so it made it a lot easier. If you don't know the story of Pride and Prejudice, it is set in Georgian England and it's about the Bennett family and centers mainly around the love story of Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy. There are balls, scandals, secret marriages, and so much more. You don't have to guess that this is definitely a 5/5 for me! If you're like me and struggle with Austen's language, try it one more time, or even read out loud for a little bit, it made more sense that way sometimes.

Dress: Modcloth//Shoes: Bait Footwear

Today was a fun day! I was off and since it's Tuesday, it's knitting club day. We decided to switch it up and went to have lunch at Panera and knit there. There wasn't too much knitting but we did have really yummy lunch :) We ended up staying there for two hours, time just flew by.

After Panera I went to meet my sweet friend Allison for coffee and we had a nice chat, again, much longer than we thought, but time flies when you're having fun right? We quickly went over to the thrift/consignment shop across the street and found some cute things, but not in the right sizes.Sometimes luck isn't on your side with thrifting, maybe next time!

Now I'm off to talk a walk in the park and then head to karaoke later! I'm trying to learn all of Hunter Hayes' song 'Invisible' so I can sing something new. I always end up singing, Disney, musicals, or Queen every time so I'm trying to switch it up!

Weekend Recap: The Great Outdoors

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Hi everyone! This weekend I was outside every single day and it was lovely! Friday night I went out to a new place called the Sunset Grille with my friend Christina and her sister and sister's boyfriend. It was mainly an outdoor place with lots of picnic tables right by the water and a little dance floor. We watched a few people dance and Christina and I got up there ourselves. We realized we need new dance moves because we do the same dance every. single. time.

Saturday I spent  most of the day with my mom! We went shopping early  in the day and then we went to the Legacy Village Art Festival. It happens every year, there are so many amazing artists who set up booths and we walked around and looked at all of them. Legacy Village is kind of like an outdoor shopping mall and has lots of stores and restaurants, and all of the restaurants set up booths as well. We got chocolate covered strawberries from the Melting Pot booth both times we passed it! Then we realized we really hadn't eaten all day so we walked over to California Pizza Kitchen and had late lunch on their patio. I also finished up a sweater that I have been working on for SO LONG. I had a few setbacks with the pattern but it came out pretty well!

Sunday was my little brother's birthday, I can't believe he's 21! We had cake for him and sang happy birthday, and then he was off to celebrate with his friends. I decided was going to be a cleaning/organizing day. I spent the good majority of the day reorganizing my bookshelf, ironing, and doing laundry. I was going to start going through my yarn box because it is just a mixed mess of yarn and loose needles, it's like a horror movie, but I was kind of pooped so that will be tackled another day.

How was your weekend? I hope it was lovely!
