24

Today is my 24th birthday! Currently I'm in a car driving back from the best family vacation ever (I'll write all about it next week!) but I wanted to do a little update on my goals from last year. There's no fun song for 24 but I'm pretty excited for this upcoming year. I'll be done with graduate school and hope to be getting a job and moving out (not too far hopefully!) but lots of life changes. Change is good and I'm excited for what's to come. Now, on to my list of goals from last year:

1. Learn to play ukelele. I played flute from 5th to 12th grade and I loved playing an instrument. Lately I have been thinking about learning to play something new, and a ukelele seems like a perfect start. 
Ehhhh....I still have work to do on this one. I can now tune really well, strum a bit and play a few chords, but I have yet to string together enough chords to play a song, so incomplete for now.

2. Complete my first novel. I have always liked to write ever since I was young, but I gave up writing for fun when life got busy with schoolwork and things. Now I feel that I have more time to write, I have actually started writing again. In April I began a book, and I have a few chapters but I would like to actually finish it. I have lots of half finished or less pieces all over my room and it would be amazing to actually finish this project.
Honestly...I think I wrote once after I said this and left the book to sit sad on my computer. I have been journaling more but creative writing just hasn't happened. Incomplete.

3. Learn to crochet. I was taught to knit by one of my Girl Scout leaders when I was younger, and I am pretty good at following patterns for that, but crocheting is another story. I can do a simple chain stitch and form rows, but I can't do anything fancy, not even a granny square.
Knitting took over my life and I had zero desire to learn a new skill while still trying to challenge myself with the knitting, so I'm not even really ashamed of this one. Still incomplete.

4. Improve my photography skills. I just discovered all the different settings on my digital camera, and I haven't actually explored all of the different things my camera can do. I also feel I should read up more on what all the settings mean. I like to take pictures but know nothing about techniques to use.
I got my new camera for Christmas and looking at my very first outfit post to now I can saw my photography skills and modelling skills have gotten significantly better. Now, there's always room for improvement so this is something I'm still working on but I give this a check for improvement.

5. Become a better blogger. I'm proud that I have actually started and continued blogging for these past 6 months, and I feel like it's time to learn more about design and give you lovely ladies some better content. Thanks for bearing with me as I figure this out.
Oh man, I was only blogging for 6 months this time last year, now it's been a year and a half! I definitely think I'm getting better at blogging but geez oh man I'm not perfect. The schedule I started in April I really enjoy and I like that I give myself the freedom to skip days if I really don't feel like it without feeling too badly. I think my design skills have improved a ton since I started. Blogging is something you can constantly learn something new or something more but I think the goal of improving was met, and I can still try to improve even more!

6. Continue working out consistently. This year I have started working out more often and I love it. I get up early and walk, do workout videos, and occasionally go to yoga class (not as much as I should). I feel so much better about myself and have so much more energy than I feel like I have in a long time.
Okay, this one is half accomplished. I love to walk and get outdoors but this winter was so horrible I didn't want to do anything but layer up and sit under covers. So not much working out happened, but since it's been warm again I love getting out for walks!

7. Gain more knitting skills. Even though I have continued knitting here and there I haven't really tried to learn anything new for a very long time. Since I have been going to knitting nights every week I feel like I should try some new stitches, maybe even make a sweater.
I have gained so many more knitting skills in the past year, I have finished not one, but two sweaters, shawls, and lots of little fun things.

8. Try more new recipes. Before this year, the only time I cooked/baked anything was usually only Christmas time when I help my mom bake cookies. I have finally discovered that I love cooking, but I am still no good at making up my own recipes so I'd like to keep cooking and baking and sharing with you all.
Yes! Baking, breakfast, and making soup are my specialties, I love trying new recipes!
9. Go to a blogger meetup. I know I'm still a super small blogger, but whenever I see posts about blogger meetups it just seems like a lot of fun to meet people in your area that do the same thing you do. My friends don't really "get" blogging so it would be great to nerd out with people about it who do :)
This one is half accomplished. I haven't been to a group blogger meetup but I did meet Lauren of Someone Like You who is the absolute sweetest! I also recently, like last week recently, met Kayleigh of Petite Femme Noir she's a brand new blogger and such a sweet lady, go check out both of their blogs :)

10. Do a photo challenge. Going along with improving my photo skills, I think it would be fun to do one of the 30 day challenges or a photo an hour post.
I forgot about this one...I tried to do the photo an hour one last summer and realized that my day was kind of boring so I gave up and then promptly forgot. Incomplete.

11. DIY! I have an almost unhealthy addiction to Pinterest and there are so many cute diy ideas. I would love to host a get together and diy lots of decorations and maybe do some decorating for my new room.
Ehhh...I didn't really do to much to my room or anything else really decorative. Incomplete.

12. Start an Etsy shop. I love Etsy. If you've never been to this website it has lots of cute little shops run by private sellers and you can find anything from vintage clothes to knitted items, to Doctor Who mugs there. I'd love to sell little knitted pieces, I actually thought about doing this years ago but I never got around to it.
Didn't happen, but I did get to make more knit pieces for other people so maybe one day?

13. Get a tattoo. I have been thinking about the same tattoo that I want as my first one for two years now. First I was afraid I was going to change my mind about it, but I haven't, so I should just bite the bullet and not let fear stop me any longer!
Almost complete. My mom and I are getting small tattoos in July, and I have plans to talk to a tattoo artist about planning my tattoo that I was talking about last year. The only hint I'll give is that they both are based on books/movies. This gets a half since it is in the works now.

14. Watch more classic movies. When I watch classics, I tend to stick with the same 10-15 actors and actresses, and I'd like to branch out and find more good movies because I love classics so much. I'd also like to try and watch more silent films.
Yes! I have done so well at watching more classic movies and trying out new to me actors/actresses! Silent films I haven't done so well on, but it's not like the goal stops now :)

15. Find new nerdy shows to watch. I love Doctor Who, Torchwood, Star Trek and Alphas, but I don't really watch that many other sci-fi shows. If anyone has suggestions I would love you to share in the comments!
Ummm...I don't know if I really found new nerdy shows because I don't have time to watch that much tv anymore, and usually any time I would have I watch movies. That being said, I started watching Deadbeat on Hulu which is about a bummy guy who can see ghosts and he helps the ghosts out, kind of like Ghost Whisperer but more comedy. I also started watching Halt and Catch Fire which is pretty much the new Mad Men. Lastly I started watching Vikings on the History Channel. SO GOOD. I started reading all kinds of things about the vikings now. In terms of the specific goal there was a fail but I did find new shows.

16. Actually print out photos and start scrapbooking. I have this huge tupperware box full of programs, movie tickets, little memorobilia and photos from disposable cameras, but I also have a huge external hard drive with hundreds of photos saved on it that I never see. I would love to work on putting these memories in scrap books instead of hiding them away in boxes.
This is something I wish I'd started but I haven't. It's still on  my list and the pictures are still all hidden away in boxes. Incomplete.

17. Do a lighthouse tour. Tieka of Selective Potential always visits the prettiest lighthouses, and I would love to do a lighthouse tour. Ohio isn't far from Michigan, and we have some lighthouses here because of Lake Erie.
Nope, not even one. Oops. Will try again.

18. Go to a reenactment weekend. I would love to go to a vintage style weekend event where everyone dresses up in period clothing, it seems like so much fun. I'd love to go to a World War II event or there's an event in New York every year that is 20s themed.
Well, the closest thing I can say for this one is that in August I'm going to a Rockabilly music festival and will be going all out with 50s style. I'm still working on getting to one of the WWII reenactments but I'm not sure if my schedule will allow. Incomplete for now.

19. Run a 5k. I actually have this goal in the works already because I've signed up to do the Color Run in September. My goal is to actually run majority of the way. I'm not a very good runner, I walk most of the time, but I have been working on running lately, so I hope by September I'm in better shape.Accomplished! I did Color Run and the Jingle Bell Run!

20. Read more. I love to read, I usually read 20-30 books a year and I keep a list of what I've read. Lately I've been reading more blogs than books, so I'd like to get back into reading more books and still read as many blogs.
Seeing as I'm already 25 books in this year, I think I'm winning this goal for sure! I've made more time to read again but I've also started buying more books than I can read again too so my to read pile has just gotten bigger!

21. Go see a sport I've never seen live. I'm not a big sports person but I like going to games, it gets really intense when you're actually there. I would love to go to either roller derby, hockey, basketball, or soccer game.
Does is count that I'm now a FIFA watcher? This may or may not be because I am obsessed with watching John Green play FIFA video games so I actually started following a few teams. Maybe we can call it half done, as in I broadened my horizons and watched something new? Maybe a quarter.

22. Continue being focused on school. This year before I turn 24 I will take my next two semesters of grad school, and after my birthday I'll only have the fall semester left and I will be done with school forever (at least for the known future). I want to continue doing very well and make sure I get the best grades possible and learn as much as I can.
Oh gosh do I want to be done with school! I'm mentally finished and time seems to just be crawling to December 13th. I love school but being in school for 6 and a half years straight is getting to be too long. Even with that being said, I still of course do the best I can and want to do well. I look forward to my classes in the fall, I'm just a little burnt out already from my practicum and working. This goal is definitely complete.

23. Appreciate the little things in life. Life can get busy, so I want to make sure that I stop and think and am thankful for any little quiet moments during my day and the kindness of other people's actions. We go through life in such a rush we forget to appreciate things like this.
This was kind of a throwaway goal when I made it, it was a little cheesy and I really just wanted to make 23 goals. The thing is, I really did start appreciating the little things more, and it shocked me how uncheesy it was in action. I'm happy if I get to start my morning slowly and sit and read a book with a cup of coffee for a bit, or baking, or just talking to my plant George (what? you guys don't talk to your plants? you're missing out!). I think taking little breathers and living in the moment is a good thing to remember.

So this year I'm not going to set another list of goals, I'll keep working on the ones I made of course but I don't want to overload myself with even more. Well, here's to 24, it seems like it's going to be a great year!
